What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy holistic health & wellness

After I had been teaching about 2 years, I began to notice that I wanted to offer more to my students than simply a routine of physical postures and breath awareness. I wanted to bridge my health care background with the benefits yoga, improving overall health and wellness.  This seemed like a natural progression in my career.  But having 20 to 30 students in each class meant that I was limited in my ability to offer effective support and truly beneficial direction to many of those students. There are so many body types, medical conditions, injuries, physical and emotional factors to consider while teaching each class.  Then I attended a workshop on Trauma-sensitive Yoga by Nicole Marcia and suddenly knew I wanted to learn more about Yoga Therapy.

“Yoga Therapy is a beautiful and empowering practice that merges Western understanding of anatomy, physiology and mind-body psychology with ancient Eastern Yogic practices. It’s a holistic approach to healing that recognizes the interconnectedness of your emotions, thoughts and body.” – Chelsea Lee, Program Director Vancouver School of Yoga Therapy.

YT is becoming widely recognized as an effective and complementary healing art by physiotherapists, chiropractors, psychologists, naturopaths and physicians. Students have been referred to me after trying many of these modalities and achieving insufficient progress on their healing journey. YT offers an approach to their challenges and goals from a different perspective, using all of the tools of yoga: breath work, movement, stillness, sound, visualization and meditation. No two people are alike so the practice will be different for everyone. Whether working one-one or in small groups, YT offers a personalized approach to achieving one’s health and wellness goals.
